Fresh Meat

The bulk of my exhibition work has been completed, so I've been stretching my legs in other directions as well as revisiting some of my old haunts, as it plainly evident here.

Growth Spurt

It has been a furious month or two, but work is nearing completion. I will be showing twenty brand new paintings at my upcoming exhibition in Sydney, so if you're in town late November/early December, swing by!

IGNITION

So, after quite a long gestation, all the pieces are in place and tomorrow we kick off the furious build-up to my next solo show later this year.

From Scratch

Here is an interesting exercise I recently did as part of the CDW workshop with John Park. It was a fun design brief for a futuristic character and treasure hunting craft. I'm sorry to say I didn't have all the time in the world to spend on this, bit it was a great cranial exercise nonetheless.

There's a whole train of thought behind this that I won't go into here.

Very fortunate to get the chance this week to be taught by some phenomenal industry artists at the CDW Sydney workshop.

I did this piece during a three hour workshop with Gerhard mozsi today. Learning a lot! Here's a breakdown of the whole week's course.

Process

This is the latest piece I did for the local Ozcomics comp, the subject being The Punisher. Since a number people have asked, I figured I might share some brief notes on the process. Below is the rough layout sketch, which I then fleshed out on Bristol board in red pencil before proceeding to ink the sucker.

 

Here are all my sticks, from the colour clutch pencil and Pentel brush pen to the dipping pens I use. There is a standard generic steel nib, a Gillott 303, which is a hardy, versatile little guy, and the fancy glass pen is a wonderful new acquisition of mine. It gives a very consistent line, not unlike a roller ball, but in the same ink you happen to be using for all the work. The fine-tipped rolled ball is what I have in my pocket at all times and was used for the layout sketch. I use Pebeo Indian ink, which is the most versatile I've ever encountered, and I've tried a lot of ink!
